How many workplaces in Austin are big enough for a machine?
Census counts 41,293 business locations in Austin's ZIP codes. About 57% have fewer than five employees, which is too few to keep a machine turning over. Professional and technical firms lead every other sector by a wide margin, which is why so much of Austin's demand sits in office break rooms.

Who employs the most people in Austin?
The City of Austin's FY2025 financial report lists the metro area's ten largest employers. Together they account for 204,228 jobs, about 15% of the region's 1.37 million. Government and education sit at the top, H-E-B has more than doubled since 2016 (from 12,198 to 27,271), and Tesla and Amazon are new to the list since then. Employers this large often run their own cafeterias or sign regional contracts. For a local operator, the bigger opening is the thousands of mid-size offices, clinics, and suppliers that grow up around them.

Where is Austin growing?
The Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate put Austin at 1,002,632 residents, its first estimate this decade above a million, up from 958,151 in 2020. Travis County grew 7.7% over the same period, to 1,389,670. Growth shows up as new towers, clinics, and plants, each with a break room or lobby that needs a vendor. Recent examples:
- •Ascension Seton opened a 325,000-square-foot women's hospital tower at its West 38th Street campus in June 2026.
- •St. David's South Austin Medical Center broke ground on a $180 million, four-story patient tower in March 2026.
- •Emerson said in April 2026 that about 400 Round Rock employees will move in phases to its North Austin campus on MoPac.
- •UT Austin announced the UT Dell Medical Center, a 300- to 500-bed hospital planned with MD Anderson in North Austin, in April 2026. Regents approved its first phase in August, with completion due in 2030.
- •Airlines finalized lease deals in January 2026 that add 32 gates at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, starting with six in 2027.
How hot do Austin summers get?
Camp Mabry, Austin's official weather station, recorded 80 days at 100°F or hotter in 2023, and 49 so far in 2026 (through September 22), already more than in 2024 or 2025. The airport station in southeast Austin runs a little cooler but follows the same pattern. For an operator, that means drink columns emptying faster from June to September, more frequent visits, and outdoor machines that need shade and a heat-rated refrigeration system.
- 2022 68 days 53 days
- 2023 80 days 71 days
- 2024 32 days 11 days
- 2025 22 days 20 days
- 2026 (to Sept. 22) 49 days 47 days
What this means for vending in Austin
- Size brings competition. Austin has more sizable workplaces than anywhere else in Central Texas, and more vendors chasing them. Locations stay with the operator who keeps machines full and fixes problems fast.
- Offices dominate, but factories are growing fastest. Downtown and North Austin break rooms suit compact smart coolers; new plants and warehouses on the city's edges need bigger setups built for shift crews.
- Extended-stay hotels are a natural fit. Guests staying a week or more buy meals and breakfast, not just candy, and a lobby cooler runs without staff.
- Heat is the service test. A 2026 summer hotter than the last two made restock timing and remote sales data the difference between a full machine and an empty one.
